Local Theater Company is dedicated to guiding emerging storytellers through our LocalWRITES student playwriting program.

LocalWRITES is a standards-based theater and literacy program that enhances reading comprehension, inspires original writing and increases self-esteem. The program is divided into two five-week-long units. The first unit focuses on elements of personal narrative including composition, self expression and performance. This unit culminates in a public presentation of monologues and spoken word pieces written and performed by LocalWRITES students. The second unit builds upon the elements of narrative including classes on improv, free writing, plot, theme, setting, character and dialogue as students compose short plays. Local Theater Company hires professional actors and directors to realize the student-composed work with a publicly presented reading.

LocalWRITES curriculum can be modified to complement the curriculum of the host teacher. In previous years, LocalWRITES students have written short plays inspired by novels they were assigned to read in class.

In addition, Local Theater Company will arrange for LocalWRITES students to attend a live, professional theater production in the Denver/Boulder metro area during the course of the residency.

“Local Theater Company's work made a profound impact on our students.  Their reading and writing skills certainly grew - but what we noticed the most was the pride and passion for publishing and sharing their own work that bloomed in a way we had not seen since the start of the pandemic.  The teachers at Local Theater Co. impressed upon our kids the value and importance of their voice, and made them believe that they each have an important story to tell the world… I am so grateful to Local Theater and to Ms. Shockency for pursuing this opportunity for our students!”
