A bit about the assessment process:

As a company that discovers, develops and produces new theatrical works (plays, musicals, hybrids), Local Theater Company is excited to engage with artists who are creating stories of this moment. Local Lab, our new work incubator, offers project creators the opportunity to workshop their material in concert with a skilled creative team (potentially a director, dramaturg, performers, consultants). The process culminates with a public presentation of the work followed by a facilitated post-show discussion. The objective is to move the work closer to full production, either at Local Theater Company or another theater.

These plays are collected a number of ways: agent and literary manager submissions, residents of western states (Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, N & S Dakota), Local staff direct solicitations and through our team of Associate Artists. As a reader, you are welcome to share the application with your trusted colleagues. Simply refer them to THIS page.

As you read these works, please consider the question: why now? Why do audiences need to hear this story at this moment? There are so many ways to answer that question and we invite each reader to interpret it on a per-piece basis (new perspective, new theme, new form, new way of telling an old story, new view on a social issue, 'this play is hilarious and we need a lift', or 'I've never seen a one-person show like this'...) Please let us know if we can elaborate on that particular point.

Once you conclude reading each work, please fill out the Local Lab 13 Reader Response Questionnaire. Your responses will be shared with Local Theater Company leadership. We invite you to take a look at the questions prior to reading your first play.

Finally, an important message regarding unconscious bias and the reading process. Our unconscious biases kick into full gear when our basic needs are unmet:  when we are tired, hungry, super stressed.  Because they are unconscious, we don't know they are impacting us. We encourage you to take care of yourselves as you read the plays and if you are in a place where your needs aren't being met, perhaps, wait before you read the next play so that you can bring your best self to the work.
