Local Lab is Boulder, Colorado's premier 3-day new play festival of new works. Now in our seventh year after a sold out festival in 2017, we offer fully-staged concert readings, parties, and the opportunity for playwrights and attendees to participate in conversations that help move new plays toward full productions. Local Lab plays have gone on to be fully-produced all across the country.

Mainstage Reading: Clockwork

By Emily Zemba
Directed by Pesha Rudnick

Darlene is a congresswoman up for re-election. But when a crucial speech goes horribly awry, she and her team scramble to fish their campaign out of the toilet. Meanwhile, a young girl copes with a recent move by planting a potato in her new neighbor’s yard. Clockwork is a comedy about real people, real problems, real loss… and how to endure a real s*** storm.

Special Event: Natural Shocks

Boulder theater companies Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company, Local Theatre Company, and The Catamounts join forces to present a reading of Natural Shocks by Lauren Gunderson at the Dairy Arts Center. In this one-woman play (starring Local Associate Artist Mare Trevathan) based on Hamlet’s most famous speech, a woman prepares for an imminent tornado in her basement. Part confessional, part stand-up, and part reckoning, her stories draw us in, until her secrets implicate us all. Tickets available online here.

Playwrights Panel

One role of the theater is to hold up a mirror to society and say, “This is how you are. If you don’t like it, change it.” In this conversation with Emily Zemba, Rehana Lew Mirza, and Andrew Rosendorf, we’ll explore what provoked these playwrights to tell the stories we are presenting at Local Lab.

Mainstage Reading: Ladybits

By Rehana Lew Mirza
Directed by Christy Montour-Larson

Janie is an aspiring comedian who has finally drummed up the courage to step on the stage and get in front of the mic. But let’s just say it fails… miserably. But Lydia comes to the rescue, inviting her into a group of other female comedians feeling marginalized in an industry—and world—dominated by men. In the process of figuring out what’s funny, the ladies also discover what’s most valuable to them.

Mainstage Reading: Paper Cut

By Andrew Rosendorf
Directed by Rachel Fowler

Kyle has returned home from the war not like he had hoped—an amputee caused by an IED explosion. Now, he’s forced to navigate the personal and emotional minefield that has become his life. Brimming with heart and love, Paper Cut is a raw exploration of the physical and emotional toll of our military, and of the signature wound of war: the loss of limbs.
