COSTUMING A MODERN DAY SHOW

The cast of YOU ENJOY MYSELF had their their first costume fitting this week. Costumer, Susan Rahmsdorff-Terry, gave us a sneak peek on what costuming a modern-day show is like:

“I find that costuming a modern show is harder than costuming period pieces, because the audiences know exactly what these people should be wearing. The palette is HUGE and it takes a lot of editing and searching to nail down just the right look. Fortunately, the hard work makes it extra satisfying when you know you've found just the right thing.”

“I always start with the text  - I want to know the world of the work so it informs my choices.  I look to see if there are any specifics mentioned (lines like, where did you get your red shoes) or specific mentions of designers or styles, which I then research to get a feel for what the playwright is hoping to see. I check for time of year, location, anything that might tell me something about what the actors need to bring their characters to life.  Then I look at the actors, take measurements and determine what parts of those text requirements will look best on the actor's body and begin hunting for images or pieces to inspire me.  Once I've found some pieces, I bring them to the director's attention to make sure I'm on the right track, or if something's been discovered that requires a different idea. It can be a bit of a hodgepodge of sources, but it's very apparent when the mix is just right.”

Playwright, Topher Payne, designed this cover for his script.

The design was inspired by Phish cover art.
